The shrublands of South America are concentrated in the southern tip and northern coastline of the continent. Shrublands along the northern coastline, the semi-desert scrubland of Venezuela, Colombia and the Caribbean Islands, are tropical and semi-desert. Various species with affinities to the surrounding tropical forests and savanna-woodlands mix with cacti and succulents. In contrast, the southern grasslands are typically cooler and include the Patagonian steppe (Argentina), the Chilean Matorral (Chile) and the Monte scrubland (Argentina).
