The Mitchell grasslands are located in north eastern Australia in the states of Queensland and Northern Territory. They occur on relatively homogeneous plains of grey, brown and red clay soils and have vegetation of the arid tussock grass type, such as Mitchell grass (Astrebla spp). The climate is tropical semi-arid with the region receiving annual rainfall between 350 and 750 mm (14 and 30 in). Though it is a tropical area with summer temperatures reaching as high as 40 °C (104 °F), winter temperatures can be relatively cold with frosts occurring over much of the region.
