Australia and New Zealand Spinifex Grassland

Spinifex grasslands are xerophytic hummock-grass communities that occur on highly sandy and sand plain soils. The grasslands are located in the northwestern corner of Australia, passing through the states of Western Australia and Northern Territory in the regions of the Pilbara, Great Sandy Desert and Tanami Desert. Mining is extensive through the spinifex grasslands and due to the severe heat and sporadic rains restoration of disturbed mining lands is an extreme challenge. Groups of researches, such as scientists at the Kings Park Botanic Gardens, are developing novel practices for restoring native vegetation under such difficult environmental conditions.
