The arid nature of the desert woodlands leads to very low vegetative cover in general; however, trees such as pistachio (Pistacia spp.), almond (Amygdalus spp.) and juniper (Juniperus spp.) survive here with a sparse understory of shrub and herbaceous plants. The desert woodlands extend through Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran, and precipitation in these regions is low averaging between 100 and 150 mm (4 to 6 in) of rainfall per year.
