New Zealand is comprised of two islands, North Island and South Island. On the South Island a mountain range known as the Southern Alps run parallel along the full length of the western coast. Alpine soils in the Southern Alps are characteristic of young mountain landscapes and are dominated by inceptisols, lithosols and skeletal soils. The climate in the Southern Alps is heavily influenced by the small size of the island and its location in the southern ocean.
