The Low Arctic is located North of the Canadian taiga and south of the High Arctic essentially rimming the northern Canadian and Alaskan shorelines. Soil types range from well drained, sandy soils to poorly drained soils that undergo a process called gleization where iron compounds are reduced to soluble ferrous form, are removed from certain areas of the soil and once the iron is removed, a grey soil color remains. Vegetation in the Low Arctic is much more diverse and dense than that of the High Arctic with over 600 species of vascular flora that cover 80-100% of the soil surface.
