Shrublands occupy the least total area of the ecosystems in Africa; however, they are widely dispersed throughout Africa and comprise some of the most critical ecosystems in the world regarding biodiversity. For example, the Cape Floristic Region (CFR) in the southernmost tip of Africa, including the Fynbos and Renosterveld ecoregions, is one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world with over 9,000 floral species and many endemic animal species.
