Grasslands and montane steppe regions are not the most common vegetation community of Africa, but they are extremely important biologically and economically. Many of these areas have historically supported large amounts of agricultural and livestock production, such as the Nile valley farming systems and the Serengeti Maasai cattle herdsman. Precipitation in the grassland regions occurs during distinct wet and dry seasons, with variations of event sizes determining annual productivity.
